When is the cheapest time to go to New York?
Question: My friend & I are looking to visit New York towards the end of this year. When would be the cheapest time to go. For about a week long?
Answer: According to the New York City Tourism Board, there are approx 84 days when New York is at its quietest. Everybody from hoteliers to theatre cut their rates for these quiet periods where demand for hotel rooms and tickets are below the norm. This quiet time happens pretty much during American public holidays when domestic tourism is quiet i.e. visitors from within the U.S. stay at home. So the key is to know when the American’s have their public holidays and book your flights and accommodation accordingly. Below are the major public American holidays for 2009/2010:
- May 2009: Fri 22nd - Mon 25th - Memorial Day Weekend
- July 2009: Fri July 3rd - As Independence Day 4th of July 2009 falls on Saturday, Friday 3rd will be treated as a holiday so make it a long weekend
- September 2009: Fri 4th - Mon 7th Labor Day Weekend
- September 2009: Sat 19th - Sun 20th Rosh HaShanah 2009
- October 2009: Fri 9th - Mon 12th Columbus Day Weekend
- November 2009: Wednesday 11th Veterans Day
- November 2009: Thurs 26th Thanksgiving Day
- December 2009: Fri 18th -Fri 25th Week preceding Christmas Day
- New Year’s Eve 2009: Fri 1st - Sun 10th Jan
- January 2010: Fri 15th - Mon 18th Martin Luther King Day Weekend
- February 2010: Fri 12th - Mon 15th President’s Day Weekend
You should also check hotel and flights for dates that run-in just before as well as during the above holiday schedule.
Happy bargain hunting!
