What is New York City like during the St Patrick’s Day celebrations?
Tuesday, February 10th, 2009St Patrick’s Day in New York City is an incredible event and one not to be missed. It is one of the city’s most popular and exuberant annual celebrations, the day in which everybody claims to be Irish, everybody drinks Guinness and everybody and everything are painted green for the day from top to bottom!
New York City has long been a favourite destination for groups of Irish going over for Paddy’s day. Amazingly last year, just over 30,000 Irish travelled over to New York during the month of March, with the majority of those travelling going specifically for Paddy’s day. This year the St Patricks Day parade is set to be bigger, better and greener than ever!
This year the parade will kick off at around 11:00 am on Tuesday 17th of March 2009. The parade will start on Fifth Avenue around 44th Street and will march up Fifth Avenue past the St Patrick’s Cathedral at 50th Street. It will then continue all the way up past the American Irish Historical Society at 83rd and the Metropolitan Museum of Art at 86th Street, where the parade will aim to finish for 5:00 pm.
During St Patrick’s Day every single New York Bar will try and tap into the Irish theme. Check out the VisitNewYork.ie nightlife guide for a full list of traditional Irish bars such as The Dublin House, The Blarney Star and Dempsey’s Pub.
