Customs VAT and Duty charges for passengers coming back from a trip to New York

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Question: I am travelling to New York in two weeks for lots of shopping! Will I get hit for VAT and duty tax when I arrive back into Dublin Airport?

Answer: Over the last 5 years an average of 650,00 Irish people made a trip to the U.S. in 2008 with just over 390,000 visiting New York! It was reported in the media that out of the tens of thousands of Irish people who went on New York  shopping sprees in the weeks leading up to Christmas 2008, only a mere €70,000 was collected by customs for items being brought into the country.

Revenue also announced last year that they would be deploying extra resources to crack down on shoppers returning from USA.  Typical items passengers pay Duty and VAT on if stopped are ipods, jewellery, musical and electrical equipment. This has forced many people to do away with tags and receipts states-side which I’m sure makes it harder for revenue and customs to track.

Note, personal allowances have increased and you are allowed to bring in goods (including gifts, souvenirs, perfume and clothing) free of duty, the combined value of which does not exceed:

€430 in the case of an individual aged 15 years or over

€215 in the case of an individual aged under 15 years
